How FarmLink Monitors 10,000 Acres of Soil with Custom Sensors

#The Challenge

FarmLink manages over 10,000 acres of farmland across three states. They needed real-time soil moisture data to optimize irrigation — but commercial sensor solutions cost $200+ per node, making large-scale deployment prohibitively expensive.

#The Solution

Using Schematik, FarmLink's two-person engineering team designed a custom sensor node in under a week. Each node uses an ESP32 with a capacitive soil moisture sensor, a solar cell for power, and LoRa for long-range wireless communication.

#The Design Process

The team started by describing their requirements in Schematik: "Battery-powered soil moisture sensor with LoRa, solar charging, weatherproof." The AI generated an initial schematic that needed only minor adjustments — swapping the suggested sensor for their preferred capacitive probe.

#The Numbers

  • $18 per node — down from $200+ for commercial alternatives
  • 500 nodes deployed across 10,000 acres
  • 30% reduction in water usage in the first growing season
  • 6-month payback on the entire sensor network investment

#What They Learned

"The hardest part wasn't the electronics — it was weatherproofing the enclosures. We went through three iterations of conformal coating before we got field reliability above 99%."

#What's Next

FarmLink is now designing a second-generation node with additional sensors for soil pH and nitrogen levels, again using Schematik for rapid prototyping.
